THE ROOTS

The Four Human Animals met at The University of Dance and Circus in Stockholm a few fateful years ago. They found each other rather quickly and soon started to laugh, cry and go for adventures together (though not necessarily in that order).  Through enjoying life in its simplicity and discussing its complexity, the four realized that they had an urge to share their thoughts, actions and visions.

Love is a strong sentiment and it is this strength that binds us — not just the love we have for each other, but the passions and beliefs we share. One key belief of Svalbard is that mono-disciplinary art is a dying breed and that if we want our art form to breath and grow we must collaborate and try to break the constricting classifications that are.

THE FAMILY

TOM BRAND

I am raised and born in Hamburg. At the age on 15 I moved to Sweden for one year which have soon become 12 with Scandinavia as my base. I rediscovered my love for creating after a less inspiring time in the german school system through hand crafts, especially woodwork, and randomly found Circus. With a love for flying and the feeling of weightlessness I look for physical exploration and experiences. I love the outdoors and vast nature which is what brings me down to earth again. I aim for collaboration without borders between all imaginable fields to change the world. A multidisciplinary fruit sallad. I believe live performance is a great place to experience something surreal in a real way and share it with others without pressing a share button on Facebook. Specialised in Rope and with a passion for movement I move between the floor and the rope with long limbs and explore performing arts with my Svalbard family.

SANTIAGO RUIZ

I grew up in the cold north of spain, spending my days playing sports, playing games or just playing with anything I could get my hands on, I really believed that one of these games would take me professional (and i wasn’t far the truth). So from play park to skate park and from skate park to circus school, my academic life seemed to loose importance quite quickly, as now i was in a place where my body could fly, and after graduating DOCH 2014 we have been flying non stop with ‘Svalbard Co’.

BEN SMITH

I grew up in the English countryside and still feel most at home in the hills. Climbing trees turned to climbing buildings turned to finding circus inside one of them, now I’m the one that gets climbed on… music has always been in my heart and it keeps pumping, and drag? Well I guess it’s the natural development…

JOHN SIMON WIBORN

Since life began in the city of Stockholm, i’ve had a mind thats been wandering the clouds,  and a body urging to jump and play in the dirt. after 15 years searching I found a way to combine these two worlds when I discovered Circus. My interest in other physical artforms such as contemporary dance, martial arts and theatre has developed in a constant search of self expression through movement. I stand on my hand(s), get thrown around, throw around, I dance, I scream, I flip and i get very sweaty.

CARLOS FERRER

I’m an electrical engineer and light designer based at Cádiz in the south of Spain, where I was born in 1983. I studied in University of Cádiz where I became deeply focused on hardware design and micro-controllers. In 2010 I finish my studies in light design in the Andalusian school of technics, and started to develop tools where I can mix my engineering skills with performance. I’m now working mostly with audiovisual installations, light applications and sesor information.

Ben Moon Smith aka ‘DOGHEAD’ is the wonderful musician of our show and has composed a both explosive and haunting live score that snakes it’s way through the piece as another character.

The new album “shanghai knights in new new york” is another journey in side the mind of a Svalbard. featuring only 2 tracks from the show, you are left a new world to unearth, as eclectic and dynamic as the world of  ‘all Genius all Idiot’, a concept album best listened from start to finish.

Svalbard Company with animal religion

The Site specific show Chicken Legz was made in a horse farm last year in ‘Fira Tarrega’ -Spain, and was awarded the prize of  ‘best show’ in the festival, we recently (October 2016) recreated this concept and experience in a park in ‘Toyohashi’ – Japan, in ‘Rainbow Caravan Festival.

Chicken Legz Chicken Legz is a site specific show that was made in a horse farm in Fira Tàrrega, Catalonia, in 2014. 10 circus artists made a cross-art disciplinary show mixing circus, dance, music and construction. It resulted in a 45 minute immersive exhibition of installations that concluded with a show of one hour. Chicken Legz won the prize for the best show in Fira Tàrrega and won the Zirkolika circus prize in 2014 for best acting on stage. Animal Religion can either adapt Chicken Legz to another farm or make a new site specific show in the forest, abandoned house, zoo, you name it! (so far one adaption of the show has been made in a beautiful park in japan)

Sifonòfor  is a music and circus show that was performed in the National Music Hall of Catalonia, L’Auditori in Barcelona in February 2015. Animal Religion offer their vision of collective work inspired by the deep sea creature the “Sifonofor”; individuals working without any hierarchal system, and constructing a show that explores the language between music and circus. Sifonòfor was awarded the best circus show in 2015 by the City of Barcelona and won the Zirkolika Grand Prize for best circus show in 2015
